The Hubei Key Laboratory of Mechanical Transmission and Manufacturing Engineering was established with project approval in 2008. Relying on the Hubei Province "Domestic First-Class Discipline" development discipline in mechanical engineering, it integrates the multidisciplinary strengths of materials science and engineering, metallurgical and mining engineering, and instrument science and technology, striving to build a high-level interdisciplinary scientific research platform and an innovation-leading highland that combines scientific research, discipline development, and talent cultivation. Grounded in national strategy, industry needs, and regional development, and oriented toward the high-quality development goals of equipment manufacturing, iron and steel metallurgy, resources and environmental protection, and the national defense industry, the laboratory has established four key research directions: transmission system design and dynamics, precision manufacturing processes and forming technology, green manufacturing and industrial systems, and high-performance sensing and precision measurement technology, serving Hubei's four 500-billion-yuan-level advantageous industries: low-carbon metallurgy, energy conservation and environmental protection, high-end equipment, and research and development design.

The laboratory has strong scientific research conditions. It currently has a building area of 6,500 square meters, 851 pieces (sets) of instruments and equipment, and a total equipment value of 55 million yuan. It also shares platform resources such as the Provincial and Ministerial Co-built Ministry of Education Key Laboratory of Metallurgical Equipment and Its Control, and the Analysis, Testing and Instrument Sharing Center of its supporting institution, forming a complete scientific research chain from design simulation, material preparation, and precision machining to performance testing and diagnosis. The laboratory currently has 62 fixed research personnel and 17 mobile personnel, among whom 55 hold senior professional titles, 100% hold doctoral degrees, and 45.16% are young and middle-aged personnel under the age of 40. It has gathered a group of high-level talents, including Changjiang Chair Scholars, Chutian Scholars, young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions in Hubei Province, and Hubei Outstanding Young Talents.

In the past five years, the laboratory has undertaken many important scientific research projects, including the National Major Scientific Research Instrument Development Special Project, the National Key Research and Development Program, and the National Natural Science Foundation of China. Its research funding has reached 240 million yuan, and it has produced abundant results, including 6 national-level science and technology awards, 51 provincial and ministerial-level science and technology awards, 92 authorized national invention patents, and a large number of high-level academic papers. The laboratory attaches importance to the transformation of scientific and technological achievements, and more than 30 technological achievements have been promoted and applied in large enterprises such as Baowu Group and Dongfeng Motor. From 2017 to 2020, the laboratory was rated as an excellent unit in the performance assessment of Hubei provincial key laboratories for four consecutive years, and has become an important force serving regional scientific and technological innovation.
